Like, say you didn't care about using the built in compressors, you just strictly needed the audio interface. I'm not sure if the audio-only portion of the TASCAM is CC or not. In order to manipulate the built-in special hardware, you need drivers. I think this is partly due to the fact that the TASCAM contains some unusual hardware features (like it has built-in compressors on every channel), which, as I understand it, simply isn't a part of the USB CC audio spec.

I was also considering the TASCAM US-16x08, but this device seems to require drivers and does not advertise itself as class compliant. I can plug it into my laptop (Ubuntu 18.04) at any time, and it just works. I recently purchased a Behringer U-PHORIA UMC1820, which IS a class compliant USB device. Not all digital audio interfaces are USB though, so I think class compliance won't help you with PCI, Firewire, etc. "class compliance" is a USB thing, basically it means if you buy a CC device, you can use it in Linux (or any mainstream modern OS) with no special drivers. Arturia Audiofuse (at least mention linux compability on their product site, but still has no control software though) :(.

And from the perspective of being a customer paying full price for their products like anybody else.
would be nice to have since the interfaces are often capable of some extra stuff.
I know that you can most of the time live without some of these features, but still. I do already own a couple of usb audio interfaces and use those daily on my linux DAW, and while they work ok, there is always some extra feature of internal routing/loop/send/return, software monitoring/mixer, firmware upgrading or whatever that you cant access because it requires software that is only being released for win/mac. It was the whole reason I got that card in the first place. I used to have an old M-audio pci audio interface/soundcard like 10 years ago, where they actually had drivers and some linux mixer software available in the download section on their website.
